Driftwood Winery
Driftwood Estate is located in the upper reaches of the Margaret River appellation. The Estate vineyard had its first plantings in 1989 into pristine viticultural soil.
Free draining gravelly loam to a depth of one meter over solid subsoil of mottled clay is the foundation of our vineyard.
Warm to hot summer with mild winters is the simplest way to describe our climate (Mediterranean). The vines thrive in these conditions getting plenty of sunshine to ripen the fruit. Low relative humidity decreases fungal disease pressure helping to increase quality.
Quality means everything at Driftwood Estate Vineyard. Operations nurture the vines through the growing season with attention to detail at every step from budburst to harvest.
The soil, climate and vineyard practices consistently combine to create intense varietal characteristics in our fruit. This all means that the winery crew are under pressure to produce quality wine from the above mentioned quality grapes.
Making each batch of wine is done separately using different processes to enhance varietal characters and flavours ensuring stylistic wines of regional and Estate distinction.
For fresher, fruit driven styles of wine very little or no oak is incorporated. The 2 wines of this style in the Driftwood stable are the Classic White and the Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blend. This second wine is a standout style of the Margaret River region.
The reds will spend up to 20 months on oak barriques (225L each, nearly all of French origin). This extended period of time in oak storage is to facilitate better integrations of the oak components with the components of the wine. At the fulfillment of this time barrels are blended together to produce a wine of complex characters that provide for enjoyable immediate drinking and beneficial for some cellaring.
